The Home Infusion Pharmacy
Home infusion is high-tech home health care often described as
a “hospital without walls.” Infusion providers are
skilled at managing a wide range of clinical services that once
were provided only in an inpatient setting. A home infusion provider
is a licensed pharmacy meeting the professional standards of practice
and state board of pharmacy standards established for providers
of sterile compounded drug products. Many providers have also undergone
a process of voluntary accreditation with a national accrediting
body.
Since the drug therapies managed by the home infusion pharmacy
are designed to enter into a patient’s circulatory system
or are injected into soft tissues or the spinal cord, medication
safety, impeccable patient care processes, clinical monitoring,
specialty expertise, and appropriate oversight facility design
and operations are absolutely essential.
